As Sunday gets closer, there are some big games in the NFL to start thinking about. Even more importantly, there are several daily fantasy football matches that you should consider when creating your roster. These might be things you would never consider normally but are now great ideas, or they might be things that you were wanting to do, but probably shouldn’t thanks to the matchups involved. Here is a quick look at a few quarterbacks you might be thinking of using. We’ll let you know whether you should spend more time thinking about starting them, or just wait for another week.
Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks
This week, the Seahawks are playing the Chicago Bears. The Bears are already a weak team, but they will be missing some of their top players this weekend. Wilson needs a win, and this is the week to play big and get it. Despite the rough start to his season, he’s a very good QB. The fact that he’s taken so long to find his form has been surprising, but this weekend’s game is a good opportunity to get him on your team for very cheap. Also consider the fact that the Bears defense hasn’t had a sack yet this year, and that they are even weaker against the passing game. This gives Wilson a lot of opportunities to score fantasy points. Take advantage of that and start him.
Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers
Newton is not a great passer, but he is a great athlete. He’s very fast, and can often make plays appear out of nowhere. If the Panthers approach the goal line, there’s a good chance that Newton will just run it in himself. In some fantasy leagues, like at DraftKings, this is worth more fantasy points than a passing touchdown. Now, consider the fact that the New Orleans Saints defense has allowed the fifth most fantasy points to quarterbacks this year, on average. There’s a very good chance that the Panthers will be able to win this game, and Newton is the leading candidate for scoring the most points on the team. Because of the high ceiling on Newton, he’s one of the top starts of the week for us.
Sam Bradford, Philadelphia Eagles
Bradford keeps disappointing. He’s talented, he’s smart, but he keeps losing games. It’s hard to know what to do with him because everyone keeps expecting him to have that breakout game where we can say to all his critics, “See! We told you so!” That hasn’t happened yet, and it probably won’t happen this weekend against the New York Jets. The Jets have the top rated defense in the NFL right now. They’ve allowed only 8.5 points per game, have had 4 interceptions, and 3 sacks. Bradford will have a great breakout game someday (maybe?) but this isn’t the week for that to happen. Keep him off your roster for now.
Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions
Stafford is at less than one hundred percent health right now, and the Denver Broncos have been brutal on the fantasy points of quarterbacks. The Broncos are not as great as they could be this year, but that doesn’t mean that their defense isn’t crushing opposing QBs. This is not a game to go out on a limb on and try to find value. It doesn’t exist here. Stafford needs a much weaker defense if he is going to thrive as a fantasy football QB. The Broncos are only allowing 18.5 points per game, have had 4 interceptions, and 7 sacks. Stafford might have potential later in the season, but stay away from him for this one.
