The third week of the NFL season has come and gone, and that means it’s time for another look at the biggest daily fantasy football busts and diamonds of the week. We will also take a quick look at how you should approach them in the future for your fantasy rosters.

Week #3 Busts

Ryan Tannehill, the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, had a pitiful showing against the Buffalo Bills. The interesting thing about Tannehill, though, was that he had a decent game from a fantasy perspective. He threw 2 touchdown passes, had 297 yards, but 3 interceptions. He was very inaccurate with his passing, though, and that’s what hurt his performance. The good news for fantasy fans is that although his team was beat thoroughly, he’s still a strong QB and can be used in other games in the future. With a weaker defensive team, Tannehill will still post strong numbers and his team’s overall performance will reflect his ability. Keep an eye on him.

The New York Jets defense was one of the biggest busts of the week. They’d allowed the fewest points per game in the NFL through the first two weeks, and then gave up 24 points to Sam Bradford and the Philadelphia Eagles. In fact, they are still leading the NFL with just 13.7 points per game after Week #3, but they gave up too many points to put forth a strong fantasy showing, unfortunately. They had zero interceptions and only sacked QB Bradford once. This is a defense that’s a little unpredictable, and although they have good numbers right now, it’s tough to say what they will produce in the coming weeks.

Speaking of Sam Bradford, the Philly QB was another bust this week. He threw for just 118 yards, had one touchdown, and had only 14 completions. Luckily his team was able to get a big win over the Jets, but based upon his stats, Bradford did not play well. His completion percentage was only 50 percent, which was by far his lowest of the season. His offensive line held up for him, though, and he was able to make plays happen even though he was inaccurate. Because Bradford does show promise, he is still a legitimate pick in the future, just ensure that he’s going against a weaker defense than the New York Jets when you select him. He’s typically far more accurate than what he showed us.

Week #3 Diamonds

Andy Dalton had a great second week, but week #3 was even better for him. He had 3 passing touchdowns, 383 yards passing, and a rushing touchdown. He only threw 1 interception and was sacked twice. It was a fantastic showing by the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback and after having two great weeks like this in a row, it’s starting to look like Dalton is the real deal this year. If you can get him for a cheaper price, he’s definitely worth picking up for your team, especially because the Bengals are going up against the Kansas City Chiefs next week and they do not look nearly as impressive as the 3-0 Bengals.

Another big diamond for the third week was wide receiver Keenan Allen. The San Diego Chargers WR had 133 yards receiving, 2 touchdowns, and caught 12 of his 18 targets. It was a big night for a wide out that typically doesn’t see a lot of press, but he’s now one of those players that you should keep your eye on as a mid tier WR. Even though San Diego lost to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Allen had a solid night and has shown that he’s capable of big plays like these in the future. He’s definitely someone to consider if the price is right.
