Looking at what Vegas anticipates will happen in an NFL game is a good way to get a gauge on general perceptions, especially now that we are going in to week #6 of the NFL season. This weekend, there are several games that look like they will be really close, and starting out with what the professional bookmakers think will be a good frame of reference to get us started.
Cincinnati Bengals at Buffalo Bills
This game has the potential to be very close, but Buffalo QB Tyrod Taylor has been battling an injury. Not only has it cut into his ability to score points in daily fantasy football, it has impacted the entire health of the Bills’ offense. And with the Bengals playing as well as they have been, namely with QB Andy Dalton having a surprisingly productive year, the Bengals are currently 3.5 point favorites, according to Vegas. This is one of those games that could go either way, which indicates that the Bills have a good chance of winning despite being underdogs, but the X factor is Taylor’s health.

New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts
This is the game that has received the biggest amount of hype this week, but there’s a chance that it could be anticlimactic. For one, Indy QB Andrew Luck is listed as questionable. That in itself takes away a lot of excitement. Still, the Colts are looking for revenge from the AFC title game of last year, particularly with all of the “deflate-gate” drama that took place and still seems to be taking place. But with Luck questionable and Pats’ QB Tom Brady having one of the best starts to a season of his life, the Patriots are pretty clear favorites. Vegas has given them 9.5 points as an edge, and this makes sense. Brady is consistently one of the top fantasy point producers in the NFL, he has a couple really good receivers, and the New England defense has been much better than expected. Indianapolis has been a series of disappointments, unfortunately. Hopefully, Luck will play and will be in top form. But this doesn’t look likely right now.
San Diego Chargers at Green Bay Packers
Aaron Rodgers is undoubtedly the best quarterback in the NFL right now. Week after week, he remains the most expensive player on pretty much every daily fantasy sports site. He’s so good, and his team is so good, that Vegas has the Packers listed as 10.5 point favorites. Whether or not this spread is accurate is not important, but knowing that the Packers are predicted to score a lot of points is. This means Rodgers is a good pick for your fantasy rosters, but so are his supporting team members. The Packers’ defense is also in a pretty good spot going into this game.
Carolina Panthers at Seattle Seahawks
This game should be a really exciting one. The Seahawks are finally starting to hit their stride as the team they are capable of being, and the Carolina Panthers are much stronger than people expected them to be. Seattle’s strong defense against QB Cam Newton’s impressive offense will be something pretty to watch unfold. Neither of these teams are receiving much hype right now, but this will be a fun game to watch. The fact that Seattle is listed as 6.5 point favorites is kind of mystifying to us, but that’s sometimes how Vegas books work. They have the hard numbers based upon how people are betting, so Seattle must be getting a lot of action. That doesn’t mean that Carolina is that much worse, though. Expect a great game here.
