Week #2 of the NFL season has come and gone. Already there are some surprises, both in how teams have been performing and from a fantasy perspective. Here, we’re looking daily fantasy football performances, looking to see who was a nice surprise for those that had drafted them, and who was a stunning disappointment. Hopefully, this information can help us draft even stronger teams next weekend.
Busts of Week Two 2016
Andrew Luck, QB, Indianapolis Colts
For all of the hype that Luck had (including some from us!), this was a disappointing game for those that drafted him. Luck threw for only 197 yards, including an interception. He had 21 completions, which is pretty nice until you consider that he threw 40 passes. That gives him a completion rate of just over 50 percent. Luck also threw just 1 touchdown this game. He’s better than this, but he flopped badly in this game.
Victor Cruz, WR, New York Giants
With Beckham still not back in the starting roster, we expected QB Eli Manning to use Cruz a lot more than he did. Still, Cruz only saw 91 yards in receiving on 4 receptions. There were no touchdowns, and his completion rate was just 50 percent. These numbers aren’t completely awful, but the low success rate coupled with a few really good catches doesn’t spell success over the long term. Cruz is good, but he should have been much better given the circumstances.
Todd Gurley, RB, Los Angeles Rams
This was another week where we had big hopes for Gurley, and were once again disappointed. After going from questionable to active for the game, many people expected Gurley to dominate, but those that did were let down. Gurley had 1 reception for 19 yards, along with 51 yards in rushing. There were no touchdowns. There’s a good chance that this will change for next week as the Rams go against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but after two so-so weeks, we’re not willing to invest too much in Gurley as far as salary goes.
Diamonds of Week Two 2016
Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, New York Jets
Fitzpatrick had a standout game against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday. It was a wild game, but the Jets ultimately came out on top, thanks in a large part to Fitzpatrick’s performance. He threw for 374 yards and had 1 touchdown pass. He had 24 completions on 34 attempts, and even was able to pick up 21 yards in rushing. Fitzpatrick is not likely to play like this every week, but this was more than likely a big push as the Jets attempted to take down the divisional rival Buffalo. That also happened to be Fitzpatrick’s former team. While this is a nice game from Fitzpatrick, we shouldn’t expect to see repeats of it on a regular basis.
Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, New England Patriots
Garoppolo had a huge game against the Miami Dolphins before he left with a shoulder injury. He had three touchdowns in the first half, and went 18 for 27 when it came to completions, throwing for a total of 234 yards. If he had played a whole game, these numbers would have been much higher. The downside is we have no idea if he will be playing anymore this season. There are only two more games before Tom Brady returns to the team, and he might be injured until then. While Garoppolo’s performance was impressive, there’s no point in betting on him anymore this season.
Jarvis Landry, WR, Miami Dolphins
In the last half of the game, the New England Patriots’ defense fell apart and Landry was one of the players that took advantage of this. He had 10 receptions for 137 yards. There were no touchdowns from Landry which hurt him a little. However, in other settings this wouldn’t have been the case just based on the law of averages. Landry performed far better than we expected, and that gives him a ton of potential going into the future.
