Friday’s Selections
Chris Sale (Chicago White Sox host Texas Rangers) is a left handed thrower and batter with five years experience in MLB. His season Earned Run Average is slightly higher than his career figure but he has won six from nine matches this season. He has slightly better stats in 2015 for allowing players to walk than his overall average in the major league. His loss on Monday night followed a run of three wins that have contributed to a decent record of allowing 29 runs in 80.2 innings from 61 hits. In his previous appearance he struck out 12 which meant he has achieved that total or better in four consecutive starts and that has only been done three times since 1914.
Sonny Gray (Oakland Athletics host Los Angeles Angels) has just two years playing time in major league baseball but the current season is by far the best to date in terms of his ERA. He has won 8 of 11 matches this season and his numbers for allowing players to walk are improving. In over 95 innings he has conceded 19 runs from 67 hits which is well below his overall career average. He has lost once in five appearances and his best performance was in his most recent start against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday when he allowed no runs in more than seven innings. He now leads the 2015 MLB starters for ERA.
James Shields (San Diego Padres @ Arizona Diamondbacks) throws and bats with his right hand and is in his ninth year in MLB. His ERA is marginally better this season than for his whole career but his figure for allowing players to walk is on his career mark. After a run of seven wins he has lost his last two matches giving him a runs figure of 39 from 87.2 innings and 82 hits. His side lost to the Dodgers on Sunday even though Shields could not be blamed as he was removed after seven innings during which he allowed just one run.
Mike Bolsinger (Los Angeles Dodgers host San Francisco Giants) has just one full year’s experience at this level but his year on year ERA figure is improving while his numbers for allowing players to walk are better this season than his career average. He has won his last two matches during which the Dodgers have outscored their opponents by 13 runs to 5. Bolsinger has conceded 12 runs from 48 innings and 36 hits and his performance has improved from last season. His win-loss record is 4-1 while his career totals are 5 wins from 12 matches so his fantasy ranking is improving.
Lance McCullers (Houston Astros @ Seattle Mariners) is a right handed thrower and left handed batter in his rookie season. He has achieved a solid ERA to date from limited opportunities. In fact he has pitched just 36 innings during which he has given up 9 runs from 22 hits. His ranking is moving significantly in the right direction achieved in three wins from four matches. In the last seven days he has pitched five innings without conceding one run. Houston beat Seattle 13-0 in their last match including five runs in the fourth innings.
