One of the biggest stories coming out of Week #2 of the NFL season is QB Tony Romo’s injury. During the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Romo went down with a broken clavicle. He had X-rays during the game and did not return. Reports are saying that Romo will not need surgery, which is a good thing, but that he will be out for eight weeks. That’s rough news for the Cowboys, who have already begun to thrive this season thanks to his playmaking. However, eight weeks is only half of a season and it gives the Cowboys plenty of time to make the postseason—even if they struggle while Romo is out.
The Cowboys are now 2-0, thanks to the win that they managed without Romo in the last part of the Eagles game. They do have a bye week in October, as well, so Romo looks like he will only miss seven games. The bad news is that Romo has had this injury before. During the 2010 season, he broke the same bone, and ended up missing the remainder of the season. Back then, it was the sixth game of the season that he went down in, and by the time that he was ready to come back, the season was pretty much over. Dallas didn’t make the postseason, and there was really no point in rushing a recovery if he wasn’t one hundred percent ready.
What happens this year will largely depend on what happens while Romo is out. If they lose every game, management might be a bit reluctant to put him back in. If they are contenders in the NFC, then Romo will more than likely be back, assuming his recovery goes as planned.
For now, Brandon Weeden will be filling in for the injured Romo. He only threw seven passes on Sunday, but he completed all seven of them, including a touchdown pass to wide receiver Terrance Williams. Still, the team should be worried as Tony Romo was the top QB in the league last year when it came to QB Rating, and the team still struggled at times during the season. This is a big chunk of time, and it is essential to the success of the team how Weeden does.
Other Injuries
Drew Brees also succumbed to an injury in Week #2. He played in the New Orleans Saints game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but it was very clear watching him that something wasn’t right. Usually Brees is quick and accurate, but he didn’t have that on Sunday as the Saints went down, 19-26. After the game, it was revealed that Brees had an injured shoulder. Initial reports are a little sketchy, but it looks like he will be out for several games. For fantasy owners, this is a big loss as Brees has been at the top of the QB lists, both in season long leagues and in daily fantasy sports leagues.
Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy also was injured. His ankle X-rays were negative, but it’s doubtful that he will be playing in the Pack’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs next Monday. Right now, reports say that he hopes to play. This is something that won’t be known until game day, most likely. Lacy has had a strong start to his season with 94 yards and 1 touchdown in the game and change that he’s played so far. The Packers should be fine in their matchup with or without him, but again, this has a big impact on fantasy owners as he’s performed well and is at the top of most leagues highest performing RB lists.
