This Week’s Golf Fantasy Selections

Zach Johnson has the best course form of the entire field over the last four years during which he has won this tournament, the last on the PGA Tour before next week’s British Open. Johnson excels on courses that put a premium on accuracy over distance and his short game will help him with decent scoring this week. He is in the top ten for driving accuracy and combines solid current form with exceptional course form.

Steve Bowditch has won tournaments in the last two years and has made 13 cuts from 23 starts this season. He won the AT & T Byron Nelson in May and is having his best season on Tout to date. He has finished seven shots or better behind the winner in his last two starts this season and the latest two renewals of this tournament. He is second in the standings for scrambling and that will be a plus around greens that are difficult to hit from the fairway.

Steve Stricker won this tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2011 but these days plays a very limited schedule which generally includes this event. Since 2009 he has the best course form in the field so clearly has a game suited to the layout. That is a surprise as he is not in the top 50 for three key skills of driving accuracy, greens in regulation and scrambling. Stricker has not won since 2012 but this week will give him the best opportunity of the season.

Jordan Spieth cannot be kept out of the team as he won this event two years ago. As a matter of loyalty he is playing this week ahead of the British Open which if he wins will be his third major of the season. Spieth was also 7th last year so has some decent course form. In a moderate field he is the most likely champion which will boost his confidence ahead of his trip to Scotland for the Open. He is the top ten for scrambling which is a key skill this week.

Bryce Molder has won just one tournament in 226 starts on the PGA Tour and that was four years ago. He combines excellent course form with solid current form and at this level can record his third top ten of the season in 19 starts. He has made 13 cuts and is currently 89th in the FedEx Cup standings but in the absence of many leading players he can move up the table this week. He is in the top 50 for driving accuracy and top 25 for scrambling so he has a good skills profile.

Kevin Kisner is one of the fast emerging stars of the season and lost in a play-off for the Greenbrier Classic last week. He was also second in the Players Championship also after a play-off. He has recorded 6 top 10s in 22 events in which he has missed just 6 cuts. That run of form has taken him to 11th in the FedEx Cup standings and he can make more progress this week on a course suited to his accurate driving and scrambling skills.
