Starting Thursday, September 8th, the PGA Tour comes to its next stop at the BMW Championship. This is always one of the most competitive tournaments of the season, and we have many of the top ranked golfers in the world entered here. Before you finalize your daily fantasy golf roster, make sure that you have the right golfers in your top two spots. This will not only give you a nice point cushion in your league, but will help you to use your salary better for the bottom section of your roster.
Dustin Johnson: Johnson has the best average fantasy point total of any golfer in the PGA this season with his 86.3. As far as salary goes, he is the third most expensive golfer in the field at $11,300. Last weekend, he finished T8, but did struggle a little in bigger tournaments at the beginning of the season. That appears to be behind him, but it is worth being a little cautious of. He’s a lot cheaper than McIlroy, and has very similar fantasy numbers. He’s made the cut 18 out of 19 times, and has 12 top ten finishes. He might not have the same upside that McIlroy does here, but he’s been a lot more consistent than anyone else. His price is well worth it for most rosters.
Rory McIlroy: Rory McIlroy is given the number one position going into this tournament thanks to a big win last weekend. It was McIlroy’s second international victory of the year, but he is hitting his stride at just the right time. The obvious downside is that he’s very expensive now at $11,900. He has a great average stroke count per round with a 69.7. He also has a very strong average fantasy point per tournament total with his 81.8. He has made 16 out of 19 cuts this year and has 10 top ten finishes. McIlroy is very good; there’s no question about that. If you draft him, you have a better than 50 percent chance of a top ten finish out of him, but you are also paying a ton for that security.
Jason Day: Jason Day has emerged as one of the best golfers in the world this year. He’s ranked at number two in this tournament with a salary of $11,600. Day has the second best average fantasy score in the field with his 84.1. He’s made the cut 16 out of 17 times this season and has 9 top ten finishes. He’s consistent and he also has two wins going for him. Day is strong, but he’s a bit too pricey for us here. He’s been a bit more inconsistent in the latter part of the season, and we aren’t really convinced that he’s worth the gamble here.
Adam Scott: Scott has been one of the better daily fantasy golf stars this season. He hasn’t missed a cut, going 17 for 17 with 7 top ten finishes. He has 2 wins, as well. The downside of Scott is that he doesn’t have as many top tens as some of the other golfers entered. He’s consistent, though. And that makes up for a lot. He is priced at $10,200.
Jordan Spieth: The former number one in the world is ranked fourth going into this tournament with a salary of $10,500. He has one of the lowest average stroke counts per round going into this with his 69.7 per round, and the fifth best fantasy point contribution per tournament with a 78.9. Spieth had a lackluster beginning of the season, and he has underperformed based upon how well he played last year, but Spieth is still a great golfer and worth considering. Our only problem with Spieth is that he’s so expensive here. Ideally, we’d like to see him under $10,000, but there might be room for him in your roster depending on whether you can find strong value in other spots.
Honorable Mention: Rickie Fowler might be the best value pick in the field. He has a salary of just $8,900, but the lowest average stroke count per round of any golfer entered with his 69.6.
