DraftKings have a fantasy game for this tournament with a $100,000 first prize. There is a $50,000 salary cap and players can choose from a roster of the full field with salaries from $12,200 down to $5,100. The site displays strike averages, top 10s and cuts made for each player and average fantasy points per game. All four days of the tournament are included in this fantasy contest and below is our team of six players displayed with their salary. The DraftKings website includes detailed statistics for each player in the field including an analysis of scores for the season and last event.
Picks have been selected on the basis of current form and each player’s skills profile in the context of the nature of the course. As a new venue on the schedule there is no strokeplay course form to assess. There will be some room off the tea at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club this week on a layout that puts a premium on accuracy from the fairways to well protected greens. Hitting the putting surfaces in the correct number of shots will be a key skill and longer drivers will be better placed to find the best portions of the greens. Strokes gained putting then becomes important in an event that could develop into a putting contest.
Will Wilcox $8,900
Wilcox has taken advantage of the absence of most of the top players before and during the British Open to post two high finishes in recent weeks. The track is debuting on the PGA Tour but was used for the President’s Cup four times between 1994 and 2005. Wilcox excels on courses that put a premium on accuracy to the greens than distance. He is a top ten player for greens in regulation and just inside the top 50 for strokes gained putting. Wilcox has made 9 from 13 cuts this season and has the form to add to his tally of three top 10s.
Johnson Wagner $8,700
Wagner is another player who has raised his game while better players have been elsewhere and he can contend in a field that has little strength in depth after a small number of leading contenders. He has finished seven shots or fewer behind the winner in the last four weeks but did not qualify for the British Open. Wagner is in the top 20 for greens hit and that aptitude can offset average length of the tee and putting. His fantasy rating is moving in the right direction and he can figure on a course that is suited to his solid and accurate game.
Daniel Summerhays $8,600
Summerhays has finished four and six shots off the pace in his last two tournaments in fields of comparable quality to the one assembled this week. He has excellent stats for strokes gained putting this season and that could bring him into the mix on a course that will require excellent putting for good scoring. The pick has made 17 from 24 cuts this season and stacked up the birdies in the Canadian Open last week. He has not won on tour in 133 starts and winning this week may be beyond him but he has the game to make the top 10.
Jason Bohn $8,100
Bohn is now a veteran of the tour who has produced some good numbers in recent tournaments just below the highest level in regular tournaments rather than majors. He finished five shots or fewer off the pace in two recent tournaments and a continuation of that level of form can see him have another good week. Bohn is a top 30 player for greens in regulation and just inside the top 50 for strokes gained putting. In 290 events on the PGA Tour Bohn has won just twice but made 189 cuts. He had 19 birdies in his last tournament and plenty of birdies will be called for this week.
Scott Langley $7,600
Langley has made his last five cuts and has the best recent form of the entire field though he is another player who did qualify for the British Open. He has been making hay while the stars were playing or sheltering from the elements in Scotland. Regardless of the quality of the field a PGA Tour win brings a full two years exemption so this week could be a golden one for a player like Langley. He is not an obvious contender on the basis of his statistics but his form makes him difficult to ignore.
Chad Campbell $7,400
Campbell has played at a higher level and once lost in a playoff for a major but his career has stumbled somewhat in recent years. He is not high enough in the world rankings to qualify for majors or world golf championship events so has to take advantage of weakened fields when the superstars of the tour are away. He is another player on a run of five successive cuts but is also a top 40 for greens in regulation. He has made 16 of 26 cuts this season and has had a busy schedule but can figure on the leaderboard this week.
