Using the Site
FanDuel is extremely easy to use. If you’ve never used the site before, you will need to create an account first. It’s a quick process and can be done in just a few minutes. You’ll need your email address, home state, and a username and password. Certain states do not allow playing fantasy sports for cash, so you will need to be aware of this before trying to fund your account. If you do want to play for real money, you can do that out of the majority of U.S. locations, and if you fund an account right after creating one, FanDuel will award you with a cash bonus.
Now that you’ve signed up to play, and funded your account if you wish, you can begin. The site has a big selection of both free entry and cash stakes games, ranging from nothing up to over $5,000 per entry. One nice thing is that if you are unsure of whether this is for you or not, you can create an account, play free for a while, and then fund your account if and when you decide to.
FanDuel covers all of the major sports. They have pro and college football, pro and college basketball, as well as MLB and NHL–when they are in season, of course. Most of their leagues are salary cap format, but they do have a few others, ranging from snake and pick ‘em formats. Once in a while, they will have something more exotic, but these are the main types of draft.
If all else fails, you can always contact their customer service department. They have over 100 staff members, many of which are on call at any given moment.
Unique Product Features
Besides their draft varieties, FanDuel has a big number of choices when it comes to the contests that they offer. They have the usual leagues that you’ve come to expect, but they also have head to head leagues, 50/50 games, and tournaments. In the 50/50 games, all you need to do to finish in the money is to finish in the top 50 percent of the entrants. The top 50 percent win something, and the rest do not. These are great if you are just starting out with daily fantasy sports, or if you are looking for something different and laid back to try. In essence, this is one of the cool things about one day leagues; they let you play for fun when you want to without a ton of commitment. You can play once and never worry about it again if you wish. These are just one day leagues. You can also spend as much or as little as you’d like. If you want to spend $1, or even play for free one day, you can. If you want to join a $5,300 tourney the next, you can do that, too.
Multiplier tournaments are one of the least understood parts of this site, but also one of the most attractive. So, let’s say you want to play in a tournament, but you’re not sure if it’s worthwhile. Playing in a multiplier can sway your decision. If you enter a 5x tourney, the payout will be five times your entry fee. If you pay $100 to enter, you will get $500 if you finish in the money, regardless of where you do end up actually placing rank wise. It’s a lot harder to finish in the money in one of these than a 50/50, for example, but the concept is the same. If you finish in a certain position, you get a big payout regardless of whether you are barely on the right side of the bubble or first overall.
Like every other daily fantasy league site out there, FanDuel is not 100 percent perfect. There are some negative aspects of it and some things that will appeal to some and not others. For one, their free games often see a lot of people that do not take this seriously. It’s fine if you are just experimenting with the site or trying to learn whether or not fantasy spots are for you, but for a more serious player, this can be frustrating. Instead, if you want to take this seriously, your best and most consistent choice is to play for real money. Draftkings may be a site for you as well.
Another negative features is the way their welcome bonus structured. Bonuses are not huge, maxing out at just $200. Also, the funds are unlocked very slowly. Every 4 percent of what you spend on entry fees goes toward your bonus unlocking. So, if you have a $100 bonus pending, you would need to spend $2,500 to get to it. It’s a lot of work to get a little bit of money, but it is free, so there’s really no complaining about it. Just be aware of this fact before relying on the extra money. 4 percent does happen to be the industry standard amongst reputable daily fantasy sports sites, however, which makes FanDuel right on par here.
